The PEI Jewish Community is in the process of negotiating with Floral Hills Memorial Gardens to establish a Jewish Cemetery section. If you are interested in acquiring a plot, please e-mail. peijewishcemetery@peijc.org
We are aiming to sign an agreement with Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in the spring of 2025via our Co-operative, the PEI Jewish Community Cemetery Co-operative, that would require us to purchase 10 plots in year one and 6 plots per year over the next 5 years for a total of 40 plots and that would give us access to a total of 80 to 100 plots for the cemetery.
The benefit of the Floral Hills site is that it is government of PEI owned and so future support for the cemetery is more assured.
There are currently 4 existing Jewish graves within the area that we would like to establish the cemetery. The Jewish community on PEI does have a degree of intermarriage and to reflect that the Jewish cemetery will allow non Jewish spouses and close family members to be buried within the cemetery.
Since our community is fairly small (150 individuals) we are opening up the cemetery to the jewish communities from all the Atlantic provinces to allow us to sell the required number of plots.
Annual co-operative membership fees must be paid in order to purchase a plot and to vote at the annual general and other meetings. The suggested annual membership fee is $10 a year but it will be determined by the co-operative membership.
The costs associated with burial within the cemetery is as follows.
Current prices of plots and services are as follows.
Plot Costs - (including perpetual care) are currently $840.00 + HST = $966.00
People are encouraged to pre-purchase plots for themselves and family (not postmortem).
Internment Costs - Monday - Friday $860 + $129 HST = $989
Extra Charge for Sunday internments are $300 + $45 HST = $345
Cemetery startup fee - Est. $200 - While the plot fee and internment fees are paid directly to Floral Hills the PEI Jewish Community Co-operative will charge an additional startup fee to pay for the costs for land surveying, installing post and rope fencing and signage associated with startup of the Jewish cemetery and future development costs.
Memorial plaques
Memorial plaques in Floral Hills are purchased from Floral Hills and are bronze cast plaques and are mounted flat on the ground to facilitate cemetery maintenance. Design of the plaques must be approved by the PEI Jewish community Co-operative and must include only Jewish symbols and only text from old testament sources.
Funeral home
We are in touch with a local funeral home, Belvedere Funeral Home, who is familiar with jewish burial customs.
Our local Chevre kadisha can dress the individual and we will have the funeral home wash and prepare the body first.
The funeral home has access to simple kosher caskets that can be delivered to the home.
The purchaser is responsible for any transportation fees and the funeral service.
Winter burial
PEI cemeteries do not generally hold winter burial services due to concerns about machinery damaging the property and manpower limitations. However, to respect Jewish practices we have worked out a procedure where a pre-build burial vault within the jewish cemetery section can de used to store the coffin under ground over the winter and then in the spring re-buried in the chosen purchased plot. All additional costs associated with this will be born by the user estate.
